I'm 26 I've been building my own microscopes and telescopes for a while. But unfortunatly I still haven't seen the rings of Saturn.I have two 700mm telescopes and have tried to configure them in every way imaginable to up their power without getting upgraded lenses. It would be greatly apreciated if you could help with the properties of the laws of magnification on telescopes and microscopes. I do have lenses for both. Also the study of the origin of man, well I found most of the skull, both hands, 1 femur bone, and left foot of a fossilized {man}. I took it to U.T.E.P. University [well only part of it} where Art,Head vetabra Prof, said it was at least 65 millon years old, and asked if I had more of it cause I only took one part of it, r. hand . IT was all in peices too so it made for a real neat 3-D puzzle. But once I got it put all back together it was so obvious because of the opposible thumb. Not to mention that the skull is tooooo obvious. But the hand is the exact same size as mine. So I'm positive that National Geographic is correct on their assumtion that man has not evolved physiclly, our pinky toe is not gona disappear. You may ask why the oldest remains of a humanoid is only 4-5 millon years old it's because the wildlife of that day would probly eat them up quickly, which is why I believe humans began to bury their dead, got tired of seeing ol' sis and dad eatn'.PLEASE let me know what I should do.......Mike 12/13/01....
Mike - muratik fanatik - http:// job: musician/guitarist - inter: paleontology/astronomy/anthropalogy - El Paso - TX - U.S. - Thu Dec 13 04:46:16 2001

The magnification of a telescope is given by the ratio between the objective focal length and the eyepiece focal length. As Saturn is very distant, it appear very little, so, in order to see its rings, you have to use a telescope with a magnification of 50 X at least, provided by an achromatic objective of at least 60 mm of diameter.
The magnification of a microscope is given by the product between the power of the objective and the power of the eyepiece. Both these values are written on these components.
If you want more information on these topics, you can read these articles:
From lenses to optical instruments

A one-dollar compound microscope

Would someone please tell me where I can purchase copper and zinc strips. I've been looking consistantantly and relentlessly for the past 10 days. I am unable to find them. My 8 year old decided he wanted to do The lemon project. Our display is complete and we have everything except the a strip of copper and a strip of zinc. Please Help there are only 3 more days left until he must demonstrate his Citurs Power battery. Please send me an email with suggestion on where I can get these items. I have however, found spools of copper wire which will not suffice for this project. I would greatly appreciate an response. It is to late to start on another project as exciting for him to demonstrate. NELLAPE@AOL.COM please! Help!.

You can often purchase copper and zinc strips at a hobby retailer or hardware store. You can also ask a firm which works with sheets of these metals for some pieces, for example a gutter-pipe firm and a zinc galvanic treatments firm. For the first trials, you can also use a piece of copper and a zinc-galvanized nail or screw.

i love jackie

Hi!!!, I want to ask you a very simple question and I want a very simple answer forit. Well, here is my very simple question: Can you build a very simple refracting telescope using a very simple magnifying lens with a very simple focal length of 150mm and the other one has a very simple focal length of 88mm. Well, that's my very simple question,HOPE you can answer it because I needed it for my very simple project and very simple experiment. Thanks & Thanks again!!!!!! BY THE WAY.. PLEASE REPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Very Simple - shokoyka@hotmail.com - http:// job: very simple student - inter: simple astronomy & simple electronics - Very - V.S. - Simple - Wed Jul 4 05:46:10 2001

Yes, with these  lenses you can build a telescope, but it will magnify about 2
times only and with a simple lens as eyepiece you will not see well through it.

I think your website is cool.

Remember that Fun Science Gallery addresses first of all the world of the Amateur Scientists and only secondly the schools. This is clearly said in the page of information about our website. Our public is mainly made up of teenagers and adults. If you are looking for little experiments for kids of elementary school, our site is not particularly suited. This is not a problem because in Internet there is a lot of websites devoted to schools, even to elementary schools. Anyway, in order to allow our readers to obtain more ideas, our intention is to alternate articles which deal with a single experiment with others which collect many experiments, like the following one:
Science Experiments for Environmental Education and Biology
In consideration of the limited offer of our site, we have made this page to allow our readers to find other ideas: http://www.funsci.com/texts/wsites_en.htm   Here you can find websites devoted to schools and others with lists of experiments.

I think that your site sucks and that you should put some useful info on here. kids do projects on plants and batterys and thats all you poopheads! I am really mad at your site
